Best Compost Bin for Food Scraps Indoors and Outdoors

In California, you can no longer put food waste in the trash. Yet most of the municipal facilities are woefully inadequate or non-existent to collect and recycle food waste. All over the world, people are turning to household compost bins to turn food scraps into a resource for gardens. Worms help speed up the process. You can build your own compost bin using wood. You need to make sure animals can’t get in there and eat all of your worms. But there are some great compost bins that you can buy and integrate into your gardening routine.

Here are some of the best bins our community have discovered:

If you live in an urban area or you experience very cold and long winters that prohibit composting, there are countertop composters that speed up the process. We like the Lomi, invented by Pela, the folks that make the phone cases.

I have always purchased worms from this Uncle Jim’s Worm farm when I started a new bin but once I have a good compost going, I can give worms to friends or start a new pile with some of them. It doesn’t take long for them to multiply.

The added bonus of home composting, of course, is a beautiful garden with endless quality topsoil.
